| Laurie Burpee is a teacher at York Elementary | |
| School in Washington, United States. After | |
| finding out she had a rare salivary gland cancer, | |
| Laurie went on medical leave in October, leaving | |
| her 20 second-grade students. Since then, she has | |
| been undergoing chemotherapy. | |
| On Dec. 9, Laurie was resting at her home before | |
| another chemotherapy appointment the next day. | |
| She noticed there was a light outside, and then | |
| she saw a bunch of Santa hats. | |
| “I thought there were kids out there, and there | |
| were a lot of kids out there,” Laurie said during | |
| an interview. “When I went to the door and saw they | |
| were kids from school, the tears started to flow.” | |
| Around 30 children came to Laurie’s house to sing | |
| Christmas carols for her. Students, parents, and staff | |
| members of York Elementary School wanted to show Laurie | |
| their appreciation. At the school, Laurie was known | |
| for organizing an annual event dedicated to doing | |
| random acts of kindness. It has now become a tradition! |
