Christmas Carol Surprise

Laurie Burpee is a teacher at York Elementary 
School in Washington, United States. After 
finding out she had a rare salivary gland cancer, 
Laurie went on medical leave in October, leaving
her 20 second-grade students. Since then, she has 
been undergoing chemotherapy.
On Dec. 9, Laurie was resting at her home before 
another chemotherapy appointment the next day. 
She noticed there was a light outside, and then 
she saw a bunch of Santa hats.
“I thought there were kids out there, and there 
were a lot of kids out there,” Laurie said during 
an interview. “When I went to the door and saw they 
were kids from school, the tears started to flow.”
Around 30 children came to Laurie’s house to sing 
Christmas carols for her. Students, parents, and staff 
members of York Elementary School wanted to show Laurie 
their appreciation. At the school, Laurie was known 
for organizing an annual event dedicated to doing 
random acts of kindness. It has now become a tradition!
