[00:00.33] | I started playing the guitar |
[00:01.60] | oh..seem ???????...emm |
[00:04.51] | Back in 1959,my..eh..My mom and dad gave me my first guitar.. |
[00:11.51] | was a little three-quater-size one. |
[00:14.55] | My mom wanted to learn Hawaii music |
[00:17.22] | and...She needed a rhythm guy so... |
[00:21.15] | ..That was me... |
[00:23.49] | and..and then my other brothers and sister took up playing instruments as well. |
[00:27.94] | My eldest brother Chris played the drums.. |
[00:31.99] | ..my sister Verginia played the Hawaii steel guitar. |
[00:34.70] | And my brother Fill who was my closest sibling. |
[00:38.96] | He was the lead guitar player,I was the accompanist. |
[00:43.48] | And I started there..in my musical life.. |
[00:46.74] | Doing..what I..I love to do and that is being an accompanist. |
[00:52.04] | And..when I was little learning songs off the radio |
[00:56.85] | and tried to work out what was going on on records. |
[00:59.92] | One of the things that I was not aware of was that |
[01:03.39] | there was a bass guitar on records. |
[01:05.38] | I thought for some reason that the rhythm player covered the bass. |
[01:10.75] | And I will show you what I mean. |
[01:14.78] | So..there was a record by a band called 'The Shadows' |
[01:19.68] | ..and the bass part went like this...(Bass..) |
[01:25.87] | And the rhythm went like this...(Ringing..) |
[01:29.87] | What I heard was.....(Bass&Ringing) |
[01:39.24] | And didn't sound like anyone was missing. |
[01:41.65] | (Laugh..)And... |
[01:43.55] | So...(Ringing..) |
[01:53.06] | See it making the sound of the bass as well as the rhythm. |
[01:55.52] | And that's...that's what I thought was..was going on. |
[01:58.83] | And it was kind of a happy accident,because when I got a little older |
[02:04.12] | and I heard Chet Atkins on the radio, |
[02:06.79] | I could hear he was playing everything at once. |
[02:09.93] | And people didn't believe that |
[02:11.04] | they said,"Oh,no.It's a recording trick,don't take any notice to that." |
[02:14.45] | I said,"Oh,no.I think he is playing everything at once..I'll show you how it goes." |
[02:19.31] | And I use my..my straight pick and I work out how to get that.(Ringing...Inro of 'Windy&Warm') |
[02:25.96] | Going like that with the pick, and then I got my fingers playing the melody. |
[02:31.10] | And I had my own little band like this... |
[02:34.98] | <Windy&Warm>.......(Clapping) |
[03:10.57] | So you got the idea anyway,right? (Clapping..Laughing) |
[03:16.13] | So that's how I started the fingerstyle playing with this straight pick. |
[03:19.42] | And then I acrossed was about 11 or 12 years old and I finally saw a photoghraph of..of Chet |
[03:26.97] | and he was playing with a thumbpick on his thumb.I had one of those..haa..moments,you know? |
[03:33.93] | And..So when I got myself a thumbpick was like someone opened the gate and the horse ran out,you know. |
[03:39.63] | So I was off and running, and I've been off and running ever since. |
[03:43.89] | And..So I sure do own Chet so much,he showed so many of us the way... |
[03:51.35] | inspired us seems still does today, what a legacy he left for us. |
[00:00.33] | I started playing the guitar |
