[00:04.50] | Chapter 2 |
[00:08.06] | After some time Tom Morris stopped talking |
[00:12.18] | and Mr White said to his wife and son, |
[00:15.98] | 'Tom was a soldier in India for twenty-one years. |
[00:21.01] | India is a wonderful country.' |
[00:24.80] | 'Yes,'Herbert said.'I'd like to go there.' |
[00:30.12] | 'Oh, Herbert!' his mother cried. |
[00:34.16] | She was afraid because she did not want to lose her son. |
[00:39.13] | 'I wanted to go to India too, |
[00:42.23] | 'her husband said, 'but…' |
[00:45.52] | 'It's better for you here!' |
[00:48.02] | the soldier said quickly. |
[00:51.02] | 'But you saw a lot of strange and wonderful things in India . |
[00:55.94] | I want to see them too one day,' Mr White said. |
[01:01.29] | The soldier put down his whisky. |
[01:03.88] | 'No!' he cried.'Stay here !' |
[01:09.07] | Old Mr White did not stop. |
[01:12.34] | 'But your stories were interesting,' |
[01:15.55] | he said to Tom Morris. |
[01:18.30] | 'What did you begin to say about a monkey's paw?' |
[01:23.22] | 'Nothing!' Morris answered quickly. |
[01:26.99] | 'Well…nothing important.' |
[01:31.13] | 'A monkey's paw?' Mrs White said. |
[01:35.15] | 'Come on, Mr Morris! |
[01:37.60] | Tell us about it,' Herbert said. |
[01:41.86] | Morris took his whisky in his hand, |
[01:44.94] | but suddenly he put it down again. |
[01:48.49] | Slowly he put his hand into the pocket of his coat |
[01:52.37] | and the White family watched him. |
[01:55.75] | 'What is it? What is it?' Mrs White cried. |
[02:01.14] | Morris said nothing. |
[02:04.11] | He took his hand out of his pocket. |
[02:07.39] | The White family watched carefully- |
[02:10.66] | and in the soldier's hand they saw something little and dirty. |
[02:16.90] | Mrs White moved back, afraid, |
[02:20.09] | but her son,Herbert, took it and looked at it carefully. |
[02:25.82] | 'Well,what is it?'Mr White asked his friend. |
[02:32.22] | 'Look at it,' the soldier answered. |
[02:35.83] | 'It's a little paw…a monkey's paw.' |
[02:40.77] | 'A monkey's paw! |
[02:43.35] | 'Herbert said-and he laughed. |
[02:46.52] | 'Why do you carry a monkey's paw in your pocket,Mr Morris?' |
[02:51.01] | he asked the old soldier. |
[02:53.76] | 'Well,you see,' Morris said, |
[02:57.04] | 'this monkey's paw is magic!' |
[03:01.19] | Herbert laughed again, |
[03:03.59] | but the soldier said,'Don't laugh,boy. |
[03:07.83] | Remember, you're young. |
[03:11.84] | I'm old now and in India I saw many strange things.' |
[03:19.49] | He stopped talking for a minute and then he said, |
[03:24.32] | 'This monkey's paw can do strange and wonderful things. |
[03:30.54] | An old Indian gave the paw to one of my friends. |
[03:35.14] | My friend was a soldier too. |
[03:38.58] | This paw is magic because it can give three wishes to three people.' |
[03:46.19] | 'Wonderful!'Herbert said. |
[03:49.85] | 'But these three wishes don't bring happiness, |
[03:53.99] | 'the soldier said.'The old Indian wanted to teach us something- |
[04:00.02] | it's never good to want to change things.' |
[04:04.47] | 'Well, did your friend have three wishes?' |
[04:08.96] | Herbert asked the old soldier. |
[04:12.14] | 'Yes,'Morris answered quietly. |
[04:16.56] | 'And his third and last wish was to die!' |
[04:23.13] | Mr and Mrs White listened to the story and they felt afraid, |
[04:29.06] | but Herbert asked,'And did he die?' |
[04:33.68] | 'Yes, he did,' Morris said.' He had no family, |
[04:40.44] | so his things came to me when he died. |
[04:44.21] | The monkey's paw was with his things, |
[04:47.69] | but he told me about it before he died,' |
[04:51.60] | Tom Morris finished quietly. |
[04:54.95] | 'What were his first two wishes, then?' |
[04:58.41] | Herbert asked. 'What did he ask for?' |
[05:03.22] | 'I don't know. He didn't want to tell me,' |
[05:07.74] | the soldier answered. |
[05:11.09] | For a minute or two everybody was quiet, |
[05:14.79] | but then Herbert said,' And you, |
[05:18.37] | Mr Morris :did you have three wishes?' |
[05:22.83] | 'Yes, I did,' Morris answered.'I was young. |
[05:29.47] | I wanted many things-a fast car, |
[05:33.84] | money… 'Morris stopped for a minute |
[05:39.72] | and then he said with difficulty, |
[05:42.79] | 'My wife and my young son died in an accident in the car. |
[05:49.59] | Without them I didn't want the money, |
[05:53.72] | so, in the end, I wished to lose it. |
[05:57.72] | But it was too late. |
[05:59.86] | My wife and my child were dead.' |
[06:04.52] | The room was very quiet. |
[06:07.41] | The White family looked at the unhappy face of the old soldier. |
[06:12.83] | Then Mr White said,'Why do you want the paw now? |
[06:19.05] | You don't need it. |
[06:21.44] | You can give it to someone.' |
[06:24.37] | 'How can I give it to someone?' |
[06:27.15] | the soldier said.'The monkey's paw brings unhappiness with it.' |
[06:33.28] | 'Well, give it to me,' Mr White said. |
[06:37.14] | 'Perhaps this time it…' |
[06:39.13] | 'No!' Tom Morris cried. |
[06:42.59] | 'You're my friend. I can't give it to you.' |
[06:48.42] | then,after a minute,he said, |
[06:51.47] | 'I can't give it to you, |
[06:54.45] | but,of course you can take it from me. |
[06:59.09] | But remember-this monkey's paw brings unhappiness!' |
[07:05.78] | Old Mr White did not listen and he did not think.Quickly, |
[07:11.64] | he put out his hand, |
[07:13.01] | and he took the paw. |
[07:15.86] | Tom Morris looked unhappy, |
[07:18.20] | but Mr White did not want to wait. |
[07:22.52] | 'What do I do now?' he asked his friend. |
[07:26.99] | 'Yes, come on, Father, |
[07:29.95] | Herbert said.'Make a wish!' And he laughed. |
[07:35.78] | The soldier said nothing and Mr White asked him again, |
[07:40.64] | 'What do I do now?' |
[07:44.40] | At first the old soldier did not answer, |
[07:48.20] | but in the end he said quietly,'OK. |
[07:53.24] | But remember! Be careful! |
[07:57.10] | Think before you make your wish,' |
[08:00.80] | 'Yes, yes,' Mr White said. |
[08:05.47] | 'Take the paw in your right hand and then make your wish, |
[08:11.15] | but…'tom Morris began. |
[08:14.49] | 'Yes, we know,' |
[08:16.77] | Herbert said.'Be careful!' |
[08:21.08] | Just then old Mrs White stood up |
[08:24.72] | and she began to get the dinner. |
[08:27.33] | Her husband looked at her. |
[08:29.88] | Then he smiled and said to her, |
[08:32.92] | 'Come on.Help me !What can I wish for? |
[08:38.13] | We need money,of course.' |
[08:41.64] | Mrs White laughed, |
[08:43.98] | but she thought for a minute and then she said, |
[08:47.63] | 'Well, I'm getting old now and sometimes it's difficult to do everything. |
[08:55.95] | Perhaps I need four hands and not two. |
[09:00.25] | Yes, ask the paw to give me two more hands.' |
[09:05.98] | 'OK, then,' her husband said, |
[09:09.72] | and he took the monkey's paw in his right hand. |
[09:13.71] | Everybody watched him and for a minute he waited. |
[09:18.94] | Then he opened his mouth to make his wish. |
[09:22.84] | Suddenly Tom Morris stood up. |
[09:25.93] | 'Don't do it!'he cried. |
[09:29.52] | The old soldier's face was white. |
[09:32.81] | Herbert and his mother laughed, |
[09:35.24] | but Mr White looked at Tom's face. |
[09:39.31] | Old Mr White was afraid |
[09:41.75] | and he put the monkey's paw into his pocket. |
[09:45.61] | After a minute or two they sat down at the table |
[09:48.76] | and began to have dinner. |
[09:51.59] | The soldier told the family many strange |
[09:54.04] | and wonderful stories about India. |
[09:57.11] | They forgot the monkey's paw, |
[09:59.74] | and because the soldier's stories were interesting, |
[10:03.08] | they asked him many questions about India. |
[10:06.75] | When Tom Morris stood up to leave, |
[10:09.81] | it was very late. |
[10:12.58] | 'Thank you for a very nice evening,' |
[10:15.62] | Morris said to the family.' |
[10:17.74] | And thank you for a very good dinner, |
[10:21.15] | 'he said to Mrs White. |
[10:24.09] | 'It was a wonderful evening for us, Tom,' |
[10:28.08] | Old Mr White answered.'Your stories were very interesting. |
[10:35.68] | Our life isn't very exciting and we don't have the money to visit India, |
[10:41.72] | so please come again soon. |
[10:44.85] | You can tell us some more stories about India.' |
[10:49.54] | Then the old soldier put on his coat. |
[10:53.07] | He said goodbye to the White family, |
[10:55.66] | and went out into the rain. |
