So to have a life-size model, I think, is something that we should be incredibly proud of. Although most items on display in the Natural History Museum are the genuine article, there are one or two like the whale and the great diplodocus, that are models. Some are modelled because the original would be too difficult to display, while others are modelled because the original has long since gone extinct. The first species we actually recorded disappearing was this the dodo. It was last seen in the 17th century. It's now an icon that represents everything that's, well, dead as a dodo. | |
