[00:01.35]■ 3 Conversation with a caterpillar
[00:07.15]'Now，'Alice said to herself．'First，I must get a little bigger，
[00:14.59]And second，I must find my way into that beautiful garden．
[00:21.25]I think that will be the best plan．But oh dear！How shall I get bigger？
[00:28.59]Perhaps I must eat or drink something，but the question is，what？'
[00:35.90]Alice looked all around her at the flowers and the trees，
[00:42.39]but she could not see anything to eat．Then she saw a large mush- room near her．
[00:50.64]It was as tall as she was．She walked across to look at it，and there，
[00:57.41]on top of the mushroom，was a large caterpillar，smoking a pipe．
[01:03.72]After a while，the Caterpillar took the pipe out of its mouth
[01:09.99]and said to Alice in a slow，sleepy voice，'Who are you？'
[01:18.23]'I don't really know，sir，'said Alice．
[01:23.73]'I know who I was when I got up this morning,
[01:28.14]but I have changed so often since then．
[01:31.33]I think I ama different person now．'
[01:35.39]'What do you mean by that？'said the Caterpillar．'Explain yourself！'
[01:46.05]'I can't explain myself，sir，'said Alice，'because I'm not myself，you know．'
[01:55.04]'I don't know，'said the Caterpillar．
[02:00.49]'It's difficult to describe，'Alice replied politely．
[02:05.40]'One minute I'm very small，the next minute I'm as tall as a house，
[02:12.11]then I'm small again．Usually，I stay the same all day，
[02:17.64]and changing so often feels very strange to me．'
[02:22.09]'You！'said the Caterpillar，in a very unfriendly voice．'Who are you？'
[02:31.33]They were now back at the beginning of their conversation，
[02:38.12]which was not very helpful．Alice felt a little cross and decided to walk away．
[02:45.54]'Come back！'the Caterpillar called after her．'I've something important to say．'
[02:56.44]This sounded better，so Alice turned back．
[03:01.73]'Never get angry，'said the Caterpillar．
[03:08.35]'Is that all？'said Alice，trying not to be angry．
[03:15.00]'No，'said the Caterpillar．For some minutes it smoked its pipe and did not speak，
[03:24.66]but at last it took the pipe out of its mouth，and said，
[03:31.12]'So you've changed，have you？How tall do you want to be？'
[03:42.67]'I would like to be a little larger，sir，please，'said Alice．
[03:49.07]'Eight centimetres is really very small．'
[03:55.80]For a while the Caterpillar smoked its pipe．Then it shook itself，
[04:04.13]got down off the mushroom，and moved slowly away into the grass．
[04:11.20]It did not look back at Alice，but said，'One side will make you taller,
[04:19.37]and the other side will make you shorter．'
[04:25.13]'One side of what？'thought Alice to herself．
[04:31.26]She did not say this aloud，but the Caterpillar said，‘mushroom．’
[04:42.37]Then it moved away into the wood．
[04:46.34]Alice looked at the mushroom carefully，but it was round， and did not have sides．
[04:56.89]At last she broke off a piece in each hand from opposite sides of the mushroom．
[05:04.59]She ate some of the piece in her left hand，and waited to see what would happen．
[05:11.17]A minute later her head was as high as the tallest tree in the wood，
[05:18.20]and she was looking at a sea of green leaves．
[05:22.90]Then a bird appeared and began to fly around her head，screaming，
[05:29.27] 'Egg thief！Egg thief！Go away！'
[05:34.32]'I'm not an egg thief，'said Alice．
[05:39.48]'Oh no？'said the bird angrily．'But you eat eggs，don't you？'
[05:45.64]'Well，yes，I do，but I don't steal them，'explained Alice quickly．
[05:55.58]'We have them for breakfast，you know．'
[05:59.77]'Then how do you get them，if you don't steal them？' screamed the bird．
[06:07.44]This was a difficult question to answer，
[06:12.01]so Alice brought up her right hand
[06:16.66]and ate a little from the other piece of mushroom．
[06:20.68]She began to get smaller at once and，
[06:25.28]very carefully，she ate first from one hand，then from the other，
[06:32.38]until she was about twenty-five centimetres high．
[06:38.28]'That's better，'she said to herself．'And now I must find that garden．'
[06:46.60]She began to walk through the wood，and after a while she came to a little house．
