The destruction of the ebony forests that once blanketed these lowlands began with the arrival of humans 400 years ago. They hunted native animals to extinction and cut down the forests to make room for farmland. As agriculture and tourism continue to grow, the depleted ebony forests are now only found in tiny pockets. And so far attempts to revive them have failed.
