Michelangelo was impossible to deal with. He was obsessional, paranoid and avaricious. Tormented by his artistic rivalries, his religious doubts, the demands of his greedy family, and his own homosexuality. But Julius's commission would produce a peerless masterpiece, the jewel of the Renaissance. 500 years after its creation, it is still regarded as one of the world's finest works.
